April 20, 2005
The next NCPSO/CWA professional issues seminar has been set for June 16-17 in San Antonio, Texas at the historic Saint Anthony's hotel. The seminar will focus on how public safety labor leaders should deal with the news media. Some of the subjects for the program will include understanding the media; media advisories, releases, and news conferences; television interviews; the use of message; and crisis communications. There will also be practical exercises to give attendees an opportunity to handle real media situations.
"We will have some exciting speakers for this program," said NCPSO/CWA Director John Burpo, "the kind of lecturers who have real hands-on experience with media issues." Among the speakers will be Jim Spearing, well-known police-fire union consultant; Michael Shannon, award-winning political consultant based in Washington, DC; Linda Foley, former newspaper writer and now a CWA Vice-President; and Mike Sheffield, President of the Austin Police Association (Local 6915).
The Saint Anthony Hotel is 2 blocks from the famed San Antonio Riverwalk. The tuition for the seminar is $300 per person; if an organization sends 4 or more persons, the cost is $275 per person. For more information about the program, call Bettsye Rose at 512-330-0882.
